Chania Town

Chania Lighthouse

The Chania Lighthouse, originally a Venetian structure from the late 16th century safeguarding the harbor, underwent reconstruction between 1824 and 1832 in the form of a minaret during the Turkish occupation. Referred to as the ‘Egyptian’ lighthouse due to its construction during the Egyptian troops’ presence in Crete, supporting the Ottoman Empire against rebellious Cretans, it features the original Venetian base. Despite damage from WWII bombings and earthquakes, a 2005 renovation restored its former glory. Positioned at the end of a protective mole in the Venetian harbor, the lighthouse offers stunning views, though access to the tower is restricted.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is a must-see attraction in the centre of the city, in the historic neighborhood of Chalepa. The permanent exhibition showcases the diverse archaeological legacy of the city throughout its extensive history. The numerous artifacts on display reveal facets of social and administrative structures, religious practices, entertainment, warfare, and trade. The exhibition provides glimpses into the past habitats’ occupations, dwellings, furniture, utensils, toiletries, burial customs, and perspectives on death. The visitor experience is enhanced by specialized representations, digital media, and two tables featuring tactile exhibits and braille captions.

Elafonissi Beach

Elafonissi is one of the most famous beaches, located on the southwest coast of the island. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including pink sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Elafonissi is part of a protected nature reserve, and the area is known for its diverse flora and fauna. The beach is shallow and the water is usually calm, making it a suitable destination for families and those looking for a relaxing seaside experience. Only 1 km drive away from Elafonissi and then 10-15 minutes walking down, there is another unique beach called Kedrodasos which means a ‘’dasos’’ (forest) filled with ‘’kedroi’’ (cedars). This spectacular hidden beach has clear waters and magnificent natural surroundings that deserves to be discovered.

Balos Lagoon

On the northwestern coast of Crete, Balos is a natural wonder that captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty. Samaria Gorge

One of the must-do’s during your visit in Crete, The gorge of Samaria is the second most visited tourist attraction on the island and by far the most popular walk. It is about 16 kilometers of unique cretan landscape that usually takes 8 to go through. More than a quarter million people walk through the gorge every year. The National Park of Samaria is open from May to October however, we suggest that you check first as the dates and times may vary due to the weather conditions.

The gorge of Imbros, situated in south crete near Chora Sfakia and Frangokastello, stands as the second most frequented gorge in Crete, following Samaria. Knossos Palace

The Minoan Palace of Knossos is Crete’s major attraction, situated outside of Heraklion, stretching across an impressive area of 20,000 square meters. The magnificent monument boasts multiple floors adorned with exquisite frescoes. Originating around 2,000 BC, the initial palace was destroyed by an earthquake in 1700 BC. However, almost immediately, a more complex palace was built. The palace was not only a royal residence but also a center of administration, trade and culture thanks to its privileged coastal location. Legend has it that King Minos built the palace in a labyrinth-like way in order to keep away the mythical creature Minotaur, who was half bull and half man.

Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa

On the southwestern part of Chania, near Elafonisi village, stands the historical Monastery of Panagia Chrissoskalitissa. Perched on the top of a cliff overlooking the Elafonissi beach, the charming white monastery is devoted to the Virgin Mary. The name Chrissoskalitissa translates to golden steps and tradition has it that among the 90 stairway steps, one is rumored to be golden, visible only to those with pure hearts. Today the monastery constitutes a famous pilgrimage destination in Crete. The monastery’s doors are open to the public, housing a folklore museum that showcases daily artifacts, instruments, tools, and memorabilia from the Cretan Revolution.
